Chaos at Chicago airport

An arsonist fire started at the regional Air Traffic Control Tower in Chicago on Friday 26 September threw both Chicago O’Hare & Midway airports into chaos with more than 2000 flights cancelled in and out of both airports. Even our own Ben Capsey was almost left stranded there on Friday but fortunately made it home when airspace was opened for a few hours later on for a few international flights.

The fire was reportedly started by a 36-year-old contract worker in an attempt to sabotage the telecommunications centre, which co-ordinates high-altitude flights coming in and out of Chicago. The authorities have ruled out terrorism as a motive for the attack.

Time to give the others a chance

After winning the title of NVOCC of the Year for three years running, not to mention Employer of the Year, we’ve decided it’s time to take a break from the Global Freight Awards and give the rest of the field a chance to win something! Instead, we’ll be spreading our wings and concentrating on some more non-industry service related awards, and will be sure to let you know more about these in due course.

In the meantime, we’ll be focusing on providing the level of customer service that enabled us to win all those awards in the first place. But don’t take our word for it – you can experience it for yourself by calling our dedicated team of Account Managers on 0845 077 4060 or by emailing commercial@cardinalmaritime.com.

Well done to our cyclists!

Our charity cycling team have raised £1447.80 for Donna’s Dream House, smashing their fundraising target for the 2014 Manchester to Blackpool Bike Ride. Braving the gruelling trip with over 8000 other riders, our team all made it safely to the finish line in good time. Micky Simmonds and Emily Plant were delighted to represent the company in handing over our cheque to Donna’s Dream House, and we look forward to continuing our support of this very worthy cause in the future.

Based in Blackpool, Donna’s Dream House provides free holiday experiences for children and teenagers with life-threatening illnesses and their families, and for recently bereaved siblings and their families. The charity relies on donations in order to carry out its good work, and we felt that it was such a good cause that we’re supporting it for the second year running.

There’s still time to donate if you’d like to show your support! Simply go to our JustGiving page at https://www.justgiving.com/cardinalcyclists2014/ to make your donation.

Our runners have Smashed their target

picture bupaThey’ve done it again! Our 14 Cardinal Maritime runners successfully completed the BUPA 10k Manchester Run this May, raising £925 for our chosen charity The Wellspring. Charlie McGonagle, Chris Bartram, Chris Day, Chris Heath, Craig Cooper, Dean Forkin, Dean Preston, Elizabeth Ellis, Natalie Gillard, Nick Thompson, Nova Sarkissian, Phoebe Fox, Sarah Lawrenson and Rob Cross collectively smashed last year’s total by £175.

As part of Europe’s biggest 10k running event, more than a quarter of a million passionate runners took to the streets of Manchester to achieve their individual goals. Since 2003, the Great Manchester Run has attracted swarms of people year on year with Cardinal Maritime being no exception.

run-resize1The Wellspring, based in Stockport, actively engage and care for the homeless and disadvantaged. As well as helping with accommodation, The Wellspring provide educational help to enable these individuals in the long run. As they are dependent on both financial and material donations, we thought this was a worthwhile charity to receive our support each year.

Even though the run is over, you can still show your support by donating through JustGiving – it’s simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity.
