The Bambisanani Partnership – Visit to Mnyakanya High School

Cardinal Trust - Bambisanani PartnershipYou may already be aware of our longstanding support of the Bambisanani Partnership – a unique collaboration between St Mary’s Catholic High School in Menston and Mnyakanya High School in Kwa Zulu Natal, South Africa. Well, in July we decided to have a look at the difference our support is making!

Chris Crowther, a member of our Cardinal Warehouse team, took part in a visit to South Africa with pupils of St Mary’s School to visit Mnyakanya High School and other projects that the Partnership funds. It was an action-packed week, including several days at the school where Chris and the St Mary’s pupils taught mentoring skills to a group of senior Mnyakanya pupils, who were then able to lead activities at a sports and reading day at the local primary school.

Bambisanani Partnership - Cardinal MaritimeBambisanani is a Zulu word, meaning “working hand in hand”, which perfectly describes the relationship between the two schools. The Bambisanani Partnership has used sport as a major catalyst to develop international understanding, education, health and leadership. It was clear from the visit how much good the project is doing, providing leadership courses and opportunities for students, training opportunities for teachers and other adults, and the chance to explore each other’s cultural heritage and experiences.

On his visit, Chris was able to distribute some sports clothes to the orphans at the Zulufadder orphanage, to meet pupils of Mnyakanya High School and coach senior pupils in leading and supporting their junior peers, and to take part in a celebratory sports event at the end of the visit.

Mnyakanya High School is situated in the rural and remote Nkandla region of Kwa Zulu Natal, South Africa. The school, in the heart of traditional Zululand, was opened by Nelson Mandela in 2004 and is located in one of the most deprived areas of South Africa with one in three adults infected by HIV/AIDS, 90% unemployment and an adult illiteracy rate greater than 60%.
